Nigerian singer and songwriter Ckay has made history as the first Nigerian artist to have a solo song surpass 1 billion streams on Spotify.

The milestone was achieved with his 2019 hit, Love Nwantiti (Ah Ah Ah), which recently crossed the landmark on the global streaming platform.

Ckay also becomes the first solo male African artist to reach this milestone.

The news has been met with celebration among fans and the music community, further cementing his status as one of Africa’s leading musical exports.

Reacting to the achievement on his X handle, Ckay wrote, “First solo Nigerian song to cross 1 billion streams. Grateful to God and the people involved in this historic success! Thank you for streaming.”

The accomplishment follows other notable African artists in Spotify’s 1 billion club.

Wizkid was the first African artist to join in 2017 through his collaboration with Drake on One Dance, which also holds the Guinness World Record as the first song ever to hit 1 billion streams on Spotify.

Meanwhile, Rema became the first African lead artist to reach 1 billion streams with the remix of his hit Calm Down, featuring American singer Selena Gomez.

South African singer Tyla is the first African female artist to join the club with her viral track Water.
