In a video posted on TikTok, the Ogbomosho-born artist, whose real name is Abolore Adegbola Akande, shared that he wishes to honour his family’s tradition and Yoruba cultural identity by getting a tribal mark to match his father’s.

“By the time I’m 50, I will get the same mark as my dad. That’s what I want to do for my birthday. A lot of my boys said I won’t do that, but, you will see,” he said confidently.

Known for blending Yoruba proverbs, language and traditional sounds into his music, 9ice’s tribal mark plan is the latest in his ongoing reconnection with his cultural roots.

In an earlier interview with Nancy Isime in August 2025, 9ice revealed he had embraced traditional Ifa worship following a life-threatening illness.

He disclosed he once vomited blood for six months, which he described as a “spiritual attack,” leading him to fully embrace Yoruba spirituality.

He expressed regret for not honouring his roots sooner, saying cultural knowledge might have spared him from the ordeal.

Tribal marks in Yoruba culture are symbols of identity, lineage, and beauty.

While their popularity has declined due to changing societal views, some communities still view them as vital links to ancestral heritage.

9ice’s decision, although unusual in modern entertainment circles, is a bold affirmation of indigenous pride.
