Okolie Amechi Death has been confirmed, following a tragic “accidental discharge” involving his 10-year-old son in Awka, Anambra State.

Police Inspector Okolie Amechi died on Sunday evening after being shot in his residence, an incident that also left one of his younger children injured.

In a statement released by the state police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, the incident occurred when the young boy unknowingly handled an AK-47 rifle assigned to his father. The child pulled the trigger, causing the loaded weapon to discharge.

The bullet fatally struck Inspector Amechi in the back. Additionally, one of his other children sustained an injury to the hand during the unfortunate incident.

Inspector Amechi was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending doctor. The wounded child is reportedly responding to treatment in the hospital.

The police command confirmed that the rifle has since been recovered by authorities, and the body of the deceased officer has been deposited in the morgue.

“The command deeply regrets this unfortunate incident and extends its condolences to the family and friends of the late officer,” the statement read. “We also wish the injured child a speedy recovery.”
