Ayra Starr Hollywood acting debut begins with the first teaser for Children of Blood and Bone, marking a major milestone in the singer’s expanding career
Nigerian singer and Grammy-nominated Afrobeats star Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, professionally known as Ayra Starr, has made her Hollywood acting debut after appearing in the first behind-the-scenes teaser for the upcoming fantasy film Children of Blood and Bone, offering fans an early glimpse of her transition from music to the big screen.
The teaser, released on Monday by acclaimed director Gina Prince-Bythewood ahead of the film’s official trailer, showcases scenes from the Paramount Pictures production and features Tems’ hit single Me & U as its soundtrack, further highlighting the growing global influence of Nigerian creatives in film and music.
Sharing the teaser on Instagram, Gina Prince-Bythewood expressed excitement about the project and its upcoming release.
“So excited to share a peek behind the scenes of our incredible journey to Orisha. Children of Blood and Bone trailer drops tomorrow. And in theatres Jan. 15!”
For Ayra Starr, the debut marks a significant milestone in a career that has already seen the singer emerge as one of Africa’s most successful contemporary artists.
Unlike previous screen appearances where she played herself, the 24-year-old said the film represents the first time she has portrayed a fictional character.
“It’s a big deal. It’s my first movie ever. I’ve been in a movie, but I was in the movie as Ayra Starr. This is the first time I’m playing another character,” Ayra Starr said.
The singer admitted that adapting to life on a film set proved both challenging and rewarding.
Ayra Starr said acting demanded a level of discipline that differed from her experience in the music industry and gave her a new appreciation for the work actors do.
“I’m used to being a singer and being a diva on set, but with this one in a movie it’s not about you. You have to be on set on time. I got used to military time and being on set on time, working hard. I respect actors so much more now. Their stamina is impeccable.”
Ayra Starr also revealed that acting has long been one of her ambitions, although a lack of confidence had previously stopped her from pursuing it professionally.
“It’s something I have always wanted to do. I love music, but I always loved the arts in general. I had always been shy when it comes to acting. This is the first time in my life I’ve been on camera, but I’m not singing; I’m acting,” Ayra Starr said.
Children of Blood and Bone is adapted from the bestselling fantasy novel by Tomi Adeyemi and is one of Paramount Pictures’ most anticipated releases.
The film has attracted widespread attention for its star-studded cast and its adaptation of a story inspired by West African mythology.
The acting debut also reflects a broader trend of Nigerian entertainers expanding their influence beyond music into international film.
