Bella Okagbue defamation dispute deepens as her lawyers reject Sheggz’s claims and raise fresh allegations over loans and a broken marriage promise

Former Big Brother Naija housemate Bella Okagbue’s lawyers rejected former partner Segun “Sheggz” Olusemo’s defamation allegations in a letter dated 24 August 2026, intensifying a legal dispute between the former couple after their relationship ended in January 2026.

The response came three days after lawyers acting for Sheggz reportedly issued a cease-and-desist notice to Okagbue over statements he alleged had damaged his reputation and that of his family.

The reported notice demanded that Okagbue stop making or facilitating allegedly defamatory statements, remove relevant content and issue a retraction and apology.

Okagbue’s legal team rejected those demands, describing the allegations in the 24 August response as “spurious and baseless”.

The lawyers maintained that Okagbue’s social media comments represented her genuine feelings and experiences and did not amount to defamatory statements capable of harming Olusemo’s reputation.

The response went further, introducing allegations that had not formed the centre of the initial legal dispute.

According to reports on the lawyers’ letter, Okagbue’s team alleged that Olusemo had breached a promise to marry her and had misrepresented his intentions during their relationship.

The lawyers characterised the alleged conduct as deceit and said they were prepared to pursue the matter before a competent court.

The lawyers also alleged that Olusemo obtained several loans from Okagbue under false pretences.

They said evidence existed to support the allegation and indicated that legal proceedings could follow.

Those allegations remain claims made by Okagbue’s representatives. There has been no reported judicial finding establishing that Olusemo obtained money by false pretence or breached a legally enforceable promise to marry.

The latest exchange follows a rapid escalation of a breakup that initially appeared to be heading towards a quiet conclusion.

Olusemo publicly confirmed on 19 August that the relationship had ended in January. In a lengthy statement, he said unresolved issues of trust and respect ultimately made it impossible for him to see a future marriage between the pair.

“I am not an abuser. For clarity, I did not cheat on Bella, and I have been single since January 2026,” Olusemo said in his statement.

Olusemo also disclosed that he had purchased an engagement ring because he genuinely believed the relationship could lead to marriage. He said reconciliation attempts were made after the January separation but ultimately failed.

“I genuinely wanted the relationship to work. I even went as far as purchasing a ring because I believed in the possibility of a future together,” he said.

Okagbue subsequently offered a markedly different account.

In posts shared on Instagram, the 29-year-old said she had remained quiet because she believed some matters were better handled privately.

She said her silence should not be interpreted as an admission of wrongdoing and described a relationship in which promises and expectations had, in her view, repeatedly fallen short.

“I gave love a chance. I gave change a chance. I gave loyalty in abundance,” Okagbue said, according to reports of her statement.

Okagbue also said she had given the relationship another opportunity because she believed people could change. She ultimately said she had chosen herself after concluding that trust, respect and peace could no longer coexist with the relationship.

The competing accounts have now moved beyond the language of a difficult breakup into a potentially consequential legal dispute.

Sheggz’s reported cease-and-desist notice alleged that Okagbue had portrayed him as violent or abusive, accused him of owing her ₦11 million and made disparaging comments involving him and members of his family.

His lawyers also reportedly accused her of cyberbullying and warned against further publication of the alleged statements.

The reported notice was dated 21 August, while Okagbue’s lawyers responded three days later.

It is important, however, to distinguish a cease-and-desist letter from a court judgment.

A demand from lawyers does not by itself establish that defamation occurred, nor does it amount to a court order restraining the recipient from speaking publicly.

There is also no reported judicial finding establishing the competing allegations of abuse, infidelity, manipulation or the alleged ₦11 million debt. The claims remain disputed between the two sides.

The legal dispute has its roots in a relationship that began in the public glare of Big Brother Naija’s 2022 Level Up season.

Okagbue and Olusemo became one of the show’s most recognisable couples, with their romance continuing after they left the house.

The relationship survived earlier speculation about a breakup. In 2024, reports of trouble between the pair circulated after Okagbue removed photographs involving Olusemo from Instagram, but the relationship continued.

By 2026, however, renewed speculation intensified as fans noticed changes in their social media presence.

Olusemo’s August statement eventually established that the relationship had ended months earlier, in January.

There is an important human element to the dispute. Both accounts suggest that marriage was not merely a distant possibility but a serious consideration at some point in the relationship.

Olusemo said he had bought a ring. Okagbue’s lawyers now allege that a promise to marry was breached.

The contrasting claims underline how differently the former partners now interpret the same relationship and its collapse.

The dispute has also drawn reactions from fellow reality television personalities and social media users, adding another layer of public attention to an already sensitive private matter.

Some reactions have focused on the legal costs and potential consequences, while others have urged restraint as the former couple’s allegations continue to circulate online.

For now, neither side has secured a judicial determination in the public record establishing the allegations against the other.

What has changed is the nature of the disagreement: what began as a highly publicised breakup has developed into a formal exchange between lawyers.

Okagbue’s representatives have rejected Olusemo’s demands and put fresh allegations on the record. Olusemo’s side has maintained that his reputation has been unfairly attacked.

Whether the dispute ends with further legal action, private settlement or another public response remains uncertain.
