Broda Shaggi stray bullet injury kept him away from work for months, as the comedian recounts his fears, treatment in Dubai and recovery

Nigerian comedian and actor Samuel Perry, popularly known as Broda Shaggi, has recounted his struggle to recover after a stray bullet injury left him unable to work for months and uncertain about his future in entertainment.

Shaggi shared his experience in a YouTube video uploaded on Wednesday night, confirming an earlier report by PUNCH Online that he sustained a gunshot injury while filming a comedy skit in March 2026.

The incident reportedly occurred on a Sunday afternoon during a brand activation assignment under the Sango-Ota bridge.

At the time, a police source said the comedian had sustained a gunshot injury, although the Ogun State Police Command said it could not confirm whether the incident happened within its jurisdiction.

The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information while investigations continued.

Recounting the frightening moments after he was shot, Shaggi said he lost consciousness before reaching the hospital but remembered praying as he was taken for medical attention.

“I was totally unconscious till I got to the hospital. So, I didn’t even know how we got to the hospital. But one thing I could remember was me praying till we got to the first hospital where first aid was administered,” he said.

He described the fear and uncertainty he experienced while waiting for medical assistance.

“A lot was happening at the same time. I was sweating. I was holding my leg, you know, I was seeing blood and all I wanted to hear was a doctor or a nurse telling me Samuel, you’ll be fine,” he said.

Beyond the immediate pain and shock, the injury raised concerns about whether he would be able to return to the demanding career he had built over several years.

Shaggi explained that dancing, singing and playing musical instruments were important parts of his performances, leaving him worried about how he would continue if the injury affected his ability to use his leg.

He also reflected on his relentless work schedule before the incident, saying he rarely took time off between writing, filming, making music and travelling for engagements.

“Since 2018 till date I never rest. It’s always back to back. If I’m not writing I’m shooting. If I’m not shooting, I’m in the studio making music. If I’m not making music, I’m travelling for something,” he said.

Being away from work for months also left him anxious that his audience might forget him while other entertainers continued releasing content.

The comedian said he tried to remain productive during his hospitalisation by writing and starting a YouTube series, even as he struggled emotionally with uncertainty about his recovery.

“There were moments where I would see videos of my colleagues. I would laugh and sometimes I would just start to cry because I wasn’t sure if I would still be able to do all these things they doing again,” he recalled.

Shaggi said he initially underwent surgery in Nigeria but was advised to pursue further treatment and physiotherapy. After about four months, he travelled to Dubai for additional treatment.

According to him, he began making encouraging progress after undergoing an operation in Dubai. He said he was able to stand with support on the second day and walk with crutches on the third day.

Reflecting on how narrowly he believed he had escaped a more serious outcome, Shaggi said he was grateful the bullet had not struck his head or another vital organ.

“It was a stray bullet and it came this way to my hip. What if it had come this way and hit my head or hit any vital organ?” he said.

Providing an update on his condition, the entertainer said he could now stand without crutches, although he continued to use them for support as he recovered.

“I’m still using my crutches for now. But there was a period where I couldn’t move without the two crutches. I couldn’t even put my leg on the floor, you know. But now I can walk. I can stand alone without crutches, but I still have to support with the crutches,” he said.

Expressing gratitude for surviving the incident, Shaggi described his recovery as a second chance and promised to return with new entertainment projects.

“I’m grateful to be alive. It’s second chance. You should also be grateful to have Shaggy back on your screen because right now I’m coming with exciting projects,” he said.
