Burna Boy Big 3 debate heats up as the Grammy winner says there is a “Big 2” before placing himself separately from Nigeria’s top Afrobeats stars
Nigerian music star Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has reignited the debate over Nigeria’s Afrobeats hierarchy after dismissing the widely used “Big 3” label and placing himself outside the established ranking.
The Grammy-winning singer made the bold declaration in a statement that has resurfaced online, telling fans that the conversation should no longer centre on the traditional trio of Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid.
“Next time anybody tells you about the ‘Big 3,’ tell them there’s only the ‘Big 2,’ and then there’s BURNA BOY,” he said.
The remark has quickly attracted attention from music fans, with social media users debating whether Burna Boy’s statement represents confidence, provocation or his long-held view that his achievements place him in a category of his own.
The “Big 3” label has become a familiar shorthand in discussions about Nigeria’s most influential contemporary music exports, traditionally referring to Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid. The three artists have dominated the conversation around Nigerian music’s global expansion for more than a decade.
Burna Boy, however, has previously rejected the idea that he should be grouped with the other two artists.
In January 2024, he made almost the same declaration while addressing fans at an event, saying: “Anytime they talk about a Big 3, tell them there’s a Big 2 and then there’s Burna Boy.”
The repeated stance suggests that the singer’s latest comment is not simply a reaction to the current online debate. It reflects a consistent view of his position within the Nigerian and African music landscape.
Burna Boy’s confidence is backed by a career that has taken him from Nigeria’s mainstream scene to the global stage.
The singer, whose real name is Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, won his first Grammy Award for Twice as Tall in 2021 and has continued to build an international profile through major performances, collaborations and global tours.
His international success has also strengthened arguments from supporters who believe he has moved beyond conventional Nigerian music rankings.
In February 2026, veteran musician Innocent “2Baba” Idibia added weight to that argument when he placed Burna Boy ahead of Davido and Wizkid in his assessment of the current global music hierarchy.
2Baba said Burna Boy was “on top of the game” and argued that the singer was ahead of the other two stars in terms of global influence and reach.
That assessment illustrates why the debate remains more complicated than a simple ranking of three artists.
Davido and Wizkid have also built enormous international careers, with both artists playing significant roles in taking Nigerian popular music to audiences outside Africa.

The conversation has also evolved as younger stars have challenged the established order.
Rema, for instance, declared in 2024 that there was no longer a “Big 3” but a “Big 4”, positioning himself alongside the established names. The comment triggered its own debate over whether the next generation had begun to break into the upper tier of Nigerian music.
Other artists have offered different interpretations of the hierarchy.
In March 2026, Ayra Starr named Tiwa Savage, Wizkid and Rema as her personal “Big 3”, leaving out Burna Boy and Davido.
The competing opinions highlight the subjective nature of the label, which is shaped by commercial success, longevity, cultural influence, international reach, catalogue strength and fan support.
Burna Boy’s latest statement has therefore added another provocative chapter to a debate that has continued to evolve with the growth of Afrobeats.
For his supporters, the argument is straightforward: Burna Boy’s global achievements and Grammy success justify a category of his own.
For others, the traditional Big 3 remains a useful way of recognising the combined influence of Burna Boy, Davido and Wizkid on the modern Nigerian music industry.
The singer’s choice of words, however, leaves little room for ambiguity about how he views his own standing.
By saying there is a “Big 2” followed by Burna Boy, he is not simply claiming a place within the hierarchy. He is suggesting that the established ranking itself does not adequately reflect his position.
