Charly Boy Slams Nigerian Pastors Over Profit Focus

Charly Boy criticises Nigerian pastors, claiming most prioritise profit over speaking truth to power

Maverick singer Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has sharply criticised Nigerian Christian clerics, alleging that most are more interested in financial gain than confronting societal issues.

Speaking on the KAA Truths podcast, the Area Fada crooner accused the clerics of remaining silent amid Nigeria’s economic difficulties and worsening security situation.

He claimed that many pastors collude with corrupt politicians to exploit ordinary citizens.

“All the pastors I know of in Nigeria, 99 per cent of them are useless. It is just a business that they are running,” Charly Boy said, describing the operations of Nigerian churches as primarily profit-driven.

The singer further emphasised that he does not align with mainstream Nigerian thinking or behaviour, insisting that his perspective sets him apart from the general population.

“I may live in Nigeria but Nigeria does not live in me. I don’t believe like you. I don’t want to think like you people. I’m not in the same class with you people. I come from a different space and time,” he added.

Charly Boy’s comments follow a growing discourse in Nigeria over the role of religious leaders in shaping public policy and addressing corruption.
