The death of Cheif Kanran has left the Nigerian film industry in deep mourning, following the sudden and unexpected passing of the veteran Nollywood actor, whose real name was Segun Remi.

The beloved actor reportedly slumped in the bathroom of his Lagos home and could not be revived before reaching the hospital. His younger brother, Yemi Remi, revealed in a recent YouTube interview that Chief Kanran showed no signs of illness before his untimely death.
“He wasn’t sick. The Friday before he died, he went for a church programme and people said he danced so well,” Yemi shared. “He even called me on Thursday and said we’d meet the next day. Sadly, I was later called that he had slumped in the bathroom. Before they could rush him to the hospital, he was gone.”
Chief Kanran had attended a lively church event on Friday, 15 August, where he was seen dancing joyfully — a gesture that now feels like a poignant farewell. His passing occurred shortly afterwards, leaving family, fans, and colleagues in shock.
The news of his death was first shared by producer Seun Oloketuyi, and tributes from across the Nollywood community have since poured in for the late icon. He was laid to rest on Friday, 12 September, at his residence in Beckley Estate, Abule Egba, Lagos.
Widely known for his powerful roles and distinct presence on screen, Chief Kanran was a revered figure in Nigerian cinema and a cultural mainstay for decades.
His final film appearance is being remembered as a fitting tribute to a life steeped in performance, passion, and faith.
In a moving gesture, many online movie streaming services have begun showcasing some of Chief Kanran’s most memorable films in honour of his legacy.
