Daniel Etim Effiong Defends Kissing Scenes in Films

Nollywood actor Daniel Etim Effiong answered critics of Daniel Etim Effiong kissing scenes by saying such moments belong to the work of acting, not to an actor’s private life.

Daniel Etim Effiong said viewers should read kisses and other romantic business as part of a role. He compared the questions he hears to those that would be put to a doctor. “Would you ask this same question to a gynaecologist who look at female genitals everyday?” he asked.

The point he is making is professional distance. A filmed kiss is directed, rehearsed and written. It is not, in his argument, a window onto the performer’s off-camera relationships.

Nollywood has argued over on-screen intimacy for years, with some audiences treating kisses as a moral issue and some actors treating them as craft.

Daniel Etim Effiong has kept taking parts that include romance. His remark does not settle studio rules or what individual performers will refuse. It restates a line many actors use: the scene is the job, not the person.
