Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about a distressing moment during the early days of his career when sudden fame left him overwhelmed and questioning the pressures that came with public attention.
Speaking in an interview titled “Davido Joins The Vibe Q” on the official VIBE Magazine YouTube channel, the award-winning singer recalled an incident that occurred only about two months after his breakthrough songs became major hits across Africa.
Davido said his rapid rise was difficult to process because he had moved from being relatively unknown to receiving the kind of attention usually associated with global music icons.
“I have like one song, I have like two records, but these are like the biggest records ever,” he said.
The singer recalled arriving in Ghana for a performance and being stunned by the reception he received from fans.
“It’s like Michael Jackson, Justin Bieber type. So I’m like, yo, we lit,” Davido said, describing the excitement of experiencing fame at such an early stage of his career.
He explained that the period was filled with constant achievements, with his popularity growing week after week.
“Every week is just something new. I’m excited. I’m like, yo, I’m blowing up every week. We’re going higher in the charts,” he said.
However, Davido revealed that the attention surrounding his new celebrity status also brought unexpected challenges.
He recalled an incident during a trip to Ghana where a private moment became public after a woman he had spent time with shared a photograph of him while he was asleep.
According to Davido, the woman had shared the image after people questioned whether she had actually been with him.
“Apparently she was telling people like, ‘oh, I’m with Davido.’ They’re like, ‘no, you’re lying.’ And then she took the picture,” he said.
The singer said the situation quickly escalated, with calls coming from members of his family after the image circulated.
“My daddy was calling me. My sisters were calling me,” Davido recalled.
Reflecting on the emotional impact of the incident, Davido said the experience was one of the most frightening moments of his early fame.
“If I saw balcony that day, I would have jumped. I was going crazy,” he said.
Davido clarified that the experience taught him valuable lessons about the vulnerability that comes with being a public figure. He said young celebrities often become targets because of their visibility and popularity.
“You’re young, you’re famous, you’re a target. Even if you want to have fun, take their phones,” he advised.
The singer, who has since become one of Africa’s most influential music figures, said he viewed the difficult moment as a turning point that helped him better understand the responsibilities and risks attached to fame.
“I was young and I liked women too much. God had to show me, trust me, God had to show me at the time,” Davido said.
