MultiChoice’s decision to keep its streaming-only packages affordable has offered South African consumers rare price relief in a sector plagued by rising costs.

Launched in 2020, DStv’s standalone streaming service was initially priced in line with its satellite offerings. But unlike its competitors, DStv Stream has seen minimal increases and even reductions.

In 2023, MultiChoice rebranded DStv Now to DStv Stream and slashed prices across most packages. Its top-tier DStv Stream Premium plan has remained at R799 per month for over two years—more than R100 cheaper than the equivalent satellite package.

In 2024, a 12-month contract brought that down even further to R699 per month, matching what satellite subscribers paid over a decade ago.

More value was added in early 2025 when DStv upgraded its Premium and Compact Plus packages to support two concurrent streams, further strengthening its competitive edge, particularly in live sports—a category where DStv still dominates locally.

Showmax, another MultiChoice product, has also resisted the industry-wide price trend.

It remains priced at R99 per month, unchanged for five years, even after a 2024 relaunch with enhanced features. Showmax Mobile increased by just R1 since 2019.

Meanwhile, global streaming platforms haven’t been as restrained. Netflix has raised its Premium plan by 36%, from R169 in 2020 to R229. Even its Standard and Mobile plans saw 29% and 20% hikes, respectively.

Apple TV+ introduced a 48% increase in 2022, the sharpest among all. Disney+ has bumped up prices annually since 2022, climbing 33% to R159.

Only Amazon Prime Video has slightly reduced its pricing, now charging R79, thanks to switching from dollar-based to rand-based billing.
