The renowned Afrobeat musician recently shared the emotional toll of growing up under the towering legacy of his father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, on the Afropolitan Podcast.

From childhood, Femi faced relentless pressure to walk in his father’s footsteps.

“In school, at the bus stop, everywhere — people would say, ‘Are you not going to be like your father? Won’t you play music?’” he recalled. “The pressure was too much.”

Femi eventually had a pivotal realization that shaped the course of his life and music.

“If God wanted me to be Fela, I would have been Fela. I had to be Femi Kuti,” he stated powerfully.

Femi confessed that in his early days, he tried to imitate his father—living with him, dressing like him, and even forming a band. But choosing to carve his own path wasn’t easy.

“His fan base descended on me. They hated me. The press hated me,” Femi said. “There was no internet then, so I couldn’t even defend myself.”

The weight of expectation and public rejection nearly derailed him, but he credited his grandmother’s tough love for putting him back on track.

“She scolded me for not touching my horn during a two-week visit. I cried all night, but that pain saved me,” Femi revealed.

Despite the backlash, Femi Kuti on Fela is a narrative of perseverance. He chose the hard path—forming his own band and developing a sound that was distinct, yet respectful of his roots.
