Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade states the team is ready to reclaim the WAFCON title in Morocco (July 5-26) but emphasizes the need for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to provide full support for their success
Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has expressed the team’s strong readiness and determination to reclaim the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title in Morocco.
However, she has also issued a clear charge to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), urging them to ensure all necessary support is in place for the team’s success.
The 2024 WAFCON tournament is scheduled to be played from July 5 to 26 in Morocco. Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been drawn into Group B, where they will face formidable opponents in Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.
The Super Falcons will commence their quest for the title, which they last won in 2018, on July 6. Their opening Group B match will be against Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.
There’s a lot of confidence in camp and we’re committed to our goal. We all understand what’s at stake.
Following a recent friendly match against Cameroon in Abeokuta, Ajibade conveyed optimism regarding the squad’s ambition, even amidst ongoing calls for improved support for the national team.
“There’s a lot of confidence in camp and we’re committed to our goal. We all understand what’s at stake,” Ajibade stated via ‘The Super Falcons Show’.
She further emphasized the team’s commitment and expectations from the NFF: “Every player heading to the tournament wants to compete and win. We will give everything on the pitch, but we also know that success depends on both internal and external factors. We’ll continue to do our part as players, but we hope everything behind the scenes is properly handled to help us perform at our best and ultimately bring the trophy home.”
The friendly against Cameroon, which was initially planned as a two-legged affair but ended up as a single match in Abeokuta, marked the first time the team had regrouped since November 2024, having missed two international windows this year.
After their 2-0 victory over Cameroon, where Ajibade scored a brace, the Super Falcons maintained their position as Africa’s top-ranked women’s team.
At the last WAFCON in 2022, the team finished fourth, with South Africa’s Banyana Banyana ultimately winning the title.
This year, the Super Falcons are determined to bring the trophy back to Nigeria.
