Speaking at the FilmOne end-of-year exhibitor showcase, Akindele explained that her original plan was to release a sequel to her record-breaking 2023 film A Tribe Called Judah.

Preparations had even begun — from rehearsals to negotiations — until what she describes as a divine redirection made her set the project aside.

“We weren’t supposed to release Behind The Scenes,” she shared. “We tried four other scripts and collaborations. But the Spirit of God kept saying, ‘No, you will shoot this film.’ The idea came from just one scene, and I thought — this is relatable. People are going through this.”

The film is slated for nationwide release on December 12, 2025, under her Funke Akindele Network banner.

True to its title, the film promises to strip back the glitz of the entertainment world and highlight the very human struggles often concealed from public view.

According to Akindele, Behind The Scenes is grounded in lived experience and reflects the hidden emotional, financial, and personal battles that artists, creators, and everyday people endure behind their public image.

The film features an impressive cast including Tobi Bakare, Veeiye, Uzor Arukwe, Uche Montana, Ini Dima-Okojie, and Ibrahim Chatta, among others — a diverse lineup sure to draw audiences.

Akindele’s December releases have become something of a tradition in Nollywood, with past hits such as Everybody Loves Jenifa and A Tribe Called Judah dominating box office figures and earning her the title of Nigeria’s top-grossing director.

By turning down a guaranteed sequel and following a more uncertain spiritual prompting, Akindele once again shows a boldness in her storytelling choices — one that may just translate into another blockbuster.
