Funke Akindele’s film Behind The Scenes has become the first Nollywood production to surpass N2 billion at the box office, cementing her status as Nigeria’s top-grossing filmmaker for the third consecutive year.

The achievement highlights the growing commercial potential of Nigerian cinema, as audiences continue to support locally produced films across the country.

In response to the industry’s expansion, the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) announced plans to enhance film quality and distribution nationwide, aiming to ensure more Nigerian films reach wider audiences.

Meanwhile, the National Film and Video Censors Board approved 1,185 films in 2025, marking an increase from the previous year and signalling continued growth in Nollywood’s production capacity.

In northern Nigeria, Kannywood filmmakers are pushing for greater international recognition, with efforts underway to showcase the region’s films on global platforms and elevate the profile of northern Nigerian cinema.
