Helen Paul recalls how friends and bosses tried to discourage her husband, Femi, from marrying her during their courtship
Nigerian comedian and actress Helen Paul has opened up about the difficult moments she faced during her courtship with her husband, Femi, revealing that some of his friends and bosses tried to discourage him from marrying her.
Paul shared the experience while speaking about handling criticism and the effect other people’s opinions can have on a person’s confidence.
According to the entertainer, the comments from people close to Femi made her feel inferior and caused her to question her own worth during a period that should have been focused on building their relationship.
She recalled an instance when one of Femi’s bosses questioned him about his relationship with her and suggested that she was not good enough for him.
The experience, Paul said, was particularly difficult because the criticism came from people whose opinions carried influence in her husband’s professional and social circles.
Rather than allowing the situation to end their relationship, however, Paul and Femi continued with their courtship and eventually got married.
She also revealed that the insecurity surrounding their relationship followed her into their wedding day.
Paul said she openly discussed her fears with Femi and admitted that she was uncertain about how long their marriage would last because of the doubts that had been planted in her mind.
“If we last two years in this marriage, I’ve tried. But if we last forever, then God is the one at work,” she recalled telling him.
Looking back, Paul said the experience taught her an important lesson about self-worth and the danger of allowing other people’s opinions to define how she sees herself.
Her story highlights the emotional pressure that can sometimes accompany relationships when family members, friends or professional associates attempt to influence a couple’s decisions.
For Paul, what began as painful criticism eventually became a lesson in resilience and self-belief.
The entertainer has since built a career across comedy, acting and academia, while her marriage to Femi has continued despite the doubts she faced during their courtship.
Her reflections serve as a reminder that external opinions can affect relationships, but ultimately, the people involved must determine the value and direction of their union.
