In a recent interview with Hip TV, Iyanya shared the lesser-known story of how he and fellow singer Omawunmi were selected from the Calabar auditions for the first Nigerian Idol in 2007.

Despite being chosen as one of just two contestants from the Calabar leg of the audition process, Iyanya revealed he could not proceed to the finals.

His final year examinations at the university clashed with the show’s schedule, forcing him to withdraw. Omawunmi, however, went on to become the first runner-up of that season.

Just a year later, Iyanya returned to the spotlight by winning the debut edition of Project Fame West Africa. That victory launched his professional career, setting him on a path to becoming one of Nigeria’s most recognisable music talents.

Reflecting on the journey, Iyanya expressed pride in sharing the judging table with Omawunmi in the ongoing season of Nigerian Idol. The reunion of the former contestants, now serving as mentors and critics, underscores how far both have come in the music industry.

“Omawumi and I were the only ones picked at the Calabar Nigerian Idol auditions. I couldn’t make it. I had my final year exam. A year later, I won Project Fame. Today, we’re both judges on Nigerian Idol,” Iyanya recalled.
