Jade Osiberu Says Physical ‘Spec’ Should Not Define a Healthy Marriage

Jade Osiberu warns couples against telling partners they were never their ‘spec’, saying it can damage trust and emotional stability in marriage

Nigerian filmmaker Jade Osiberu has cautioned married couples against making what she described as blunt and unnecessary “spec” comments about their partners, warning that such remarks can quietly weaken trust and emotional security within relationships.

The filmmaker, aged 40, shared her thoughts on Thursday via her verified X account, where she addressed growing online discussions around physical attraction, partner “preferences” and long-term marital expectations.

Osiberu explained that while individuals may not always end up with partners who fit their original physical ideals, relationships can still be healthy and deeply fulfilling when built on mutual respect and emotional maturity.

She said the real issue is not personal preference itself, but the decision to repeatedly highlight to a spouse that they were never the preferred physical “type”.

According to her, such statements may be framed as honesty, but often carry unintended emotional weight that lingers within the relationship dynamic.

She noted that people sometimes enter marriages with culturally shaped ideas of attractiveness, often influenced by media portrayals from earlier decades, but argued that these ideals frequently evolve with time and experience.

Osiberu said, “The foolishness though is communicating it as though their partner somehow didn’t measure up to their ‘spec’ instead of simply admitting that the idea of their spec was stupid all along.”

She further warned that even private remarks of this nature can create long-term emotional consequences, adding that it can subtly damage how a partner views their worth in the relationship.

Osiberu said, “Communicating publicly or even privately to your partner that they weren’t your spec to begin with may seem harmless… but subconsciously, it’s an ego trip for the person who ‘settled’ and for the partner, it becomes a chip they will always carry.”

She added that what may appear as honesty can sometimes become emotionally harmful, stressing that marriage requires sensitivity in communication as much as it requires compatibility.

The filmmaker emphasised that couples should acknowledge changes in preference without framing their partners as second choices, noting that such framing can distort emotional balance in a marriage.
