Lagos dispatch rider accident claims life after tanker crash in Alapere, with LASTMA restoring order and launching investigation

A dispatch rider has died in a fatal road accident that occurred on Monday along the Motorways inward Estate axis of Alapere in Lagos State, with swift intervention by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority helping to prevent a breakdown of law and order at the scene.

The Lagos dispatch rider accident involved a collision between a moving motorcycle and an empty tanker belonging to NIPCO, reportedly driven at high speed before the impact.

According to a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the tanker with registration number TTN-776ZQ allegedly rammed into the dispatch rider, leading to a devastating crash.

The impact of the collision was described as severe, resulting in the immediate death of the rider at the scene before emergency responders could intervene.

The incident sparked anger among other dispatch riders in the area, who reportedly attempted to attack the tanker driver in retaliation.

Operatives of LASTMA responded quickly to the scene, demonstrating restraint and professionalism as they rescued the injured driver from the mob.

The tanker driver was handed over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service and taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention after sustaining injuries during the attack.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force were also deployed to restore order and disperse the agitated crowd, preventing further escalation of violence.

In a reaction, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to the family of the deceased dispatch rider.

He cautioned motorists, especially tanker drivers, against speeding and reckless driving, stressing that excessive speed remains a leading cause of fatal crashes in Lagos.

Bakare-Oki urged all road users to exercise caution and responsibility, noting that adherence to traffic laws is essential to safeguarding lives.

Authorities confirmed that both the tanker and the damaged motorcycle have been handed over to the police, while investigations have commenced to determine the exact cause of the crash and possible prosecution.
