The family of late Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has demanded the postponement of a DNA test scheduled for Saturday, October 31, over concerns about the identity and procedures of a United States laboratory expected to analyse the samples.
The examination, scheduled to take place at the Mainland General Hospital/IDH in Yaba, Lagos, is intended to establish the paternity of Liam, the late singer’s son, following an ongoing legal dispute involving Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, and his widow, Omowunmi Aloba.
In a statement signed by the family head, Samuel Aloba, on Thursday, the family requested full disclosure of the laboratory expected to conduct the analysis and clarification of the arrangements for collecting, preserving and transporting the biological samples.
The family expressed concern that samples could be collected in Lagos and subsequently transferred to an overseas facility without sufficient information about the laboratory or the procedures involved.
It also questioned whether the Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, which it said was designated under a court order issued on May 5, 2026, would conduct the analysis locally or merely collect the samples before sending them abroad.
According to the family, any arrangement that differs materially from the court’s directive should be clarified through the appropriate judicial process.
The Aloba family further requested the name and address of the proposed US laboratory, its accreditation status and details of the procedures that would guide the preservation, transportation and examination of the samples.
It insisted that adequate safeguards must be established to guarantee that the samples collected in Lagos are the same ones eventually analysed overseas.
The statement also raised concerns about possible mishandling or interference with the samples during the process.
However, the family clarified that it was not alleging that any manipulation had already taken place, stressing that its demands were intended to protect the credibility and reliability of the examination.
The family also referenced previous concerns it had raised about the handling of biological samples during examinations connected to investigations into Mohbad’s death.
It maintained that those issues required clarification and should not be interpreted as established evidence of wrongdoing.
Consequently, the family called for Saturday’s scheduled DNA examination to be postponed until the outstanding questions were addressed, all parties received adequate notice and further court directions were obtained where necessary.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, at the age of 27, under circumstances that generated widespread public attention and calls for a thorough investigation.
Since his death, the paternity of Liam has remained a subject of disagreement between members of the singer’s family, particularly his father, Joseph Aloba, and his widow, Omowunmi.
A Lagos court had previously ordered DNA testing to resolve the dispute, but disagreements over the testing arrangements have continued to delay the process.
The latest demand by the Aloba family adds another development to the prolonged dispute, with the family insisting that transparency and proper safeguards must be guaranteed before the examination proceeds.
