DSI CEO Remembers Mr Ibu as Africa’s Comedy Legend

Mr Ibu legacy celebrated by Dominic Nwuzor, who recalls the Nollywood comic star’s impact on African audiences and his role promoting peace and joy

Dominic Nwuzor, Chief Executive Officer of Don Singles International and longtime manager of the late Nollywood comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has described the actor’s death as the end of an era, hailing him as the man who truly “made Africa laugh.”

Speaking in Abuja on Sunday, Nwuzor recalled managing the comic legend for over two decades, celebrating his unique ability to evoke laughter through memorable roles, particularly his eponymous character in the 2004 movie Mr Ibu.

Born in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, John Okafor featured in over 200 Nollywood films.

He became a household name across Africa for his comedic timing, expressive facial gestures, and portrayal of clumsy or foolish characters that resonated deeply with audiences.

“The ‘Mr Ibu’ persona was synonymous with laughter across Africa and beyond,” Nwuzor said.

“He used humour to promote peace and unity across the continent. Even a little child in Ghana knows Mr Ibu.”

Nwuzor recounted that the actor’s popularity extended far beyond Nigeria.

In countries including Ghana, South Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, Gambia, Gabon and Botswana, crowds of fans would gather to welcome him.

He often carried the Nigerian flag abroad to project pride in his homeland.

The DSI CEO highlighted Mr Ibu’s role as a cultural ambassador who used his craft to reconcile communities and present Nigeria in a positive light.

Notably, his performances helped resolve conflicts between two warring tribes in Ghana, earning him a chieftaincy title, Malangula I of Tamale Land, meaning “the peacemaker.”

Nwuzor himself was named Ngulala, meaning “mouthpiece of the peacemaker.”

“Foreigners fell in love with Nigeria through John,” Nwuzor said, noting that his popularity encouraged visits to Nigeria and enhanced the country’s image globally.

Reflecting on the actor’s career, Nwuzor urged young talents to embrace mentorship and training to achieve success in the entertainment industry.

He added that Don Singles International plans to launch DSI Movies, a platform designed to nurture emerging talent in Nollywood.

“John Okafor truly made Africa laugh and left a legacy that will inspire generations of comedians and actors across the continent,” Nwuzor concluded.
