OOU Under Fire for “No Bra, No Exam” Policy

OOU Exam faces backlash for reportedly checking female students for bras before exams. Authorities and SUG clarify existing dress code.

The OOU Exam Dress Code has sparked widespread reactions, following reports that authorities at the Ogun State Government-owned Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye are checking female students for bras before allowing them to write examinations.

A video circulating online shows school representatives conducting physical checks on female undergraduates to determine if they are wearing bras before granting access to the university campus.

This development has drawn strong condemnation from many, including students, who criticize the school for focusing on what they deem a minor issue rather than prioritizing academic improvement.

Education should liberate the mind, not restrict personal expression.

One visibly outraged student told journalists, “What happened is because we are having exams. They don’t do this every time. They will check you if you are wearing a bra. It has happened to me once, even though I felt embarrassed. That is OOU and their nonsense.”

However, the Student Union Government (SUG) of the institution has offered a clarification, stating that the policy is not new.

The SUG explained that it forms part of the OOU authorities’ broader policy to ensure decent dressing among students, applicable before, during, and after examinations.

The SUG stressed that the measure is not solely implemented because of examinations.

Muizz Olatunji, the SUG President, issued a statement explaining, “OOU Student Union has engaged with the institution to explore alternative approaches to addressing indecent dressing, focusing on respectful and dignified interactions between students and staff.”

He further added that the “No bra, no entry” rule is not a recent directive but rather a continuation of the university’s existing policy on student conduct.
