False Death Rumours Spark Alarm Over Pete Edochie’s Health

Viral online claims suggesting that veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie had died sparked widespread concern on Tuesday, before being firmly debunked by media checks and family sources.

The reports, which circulated rapidly across WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, alleged that the 78-year-old actor was rushed to hospital and later passed away.

Some posts further claimed that the news had been confirmed by one of his sons on social media.

However, checks conducted on the verified social media pages of Yul Edochie and Uche Edochie showed no such announcement, while no reputable Nigerian or international news organisation reported the actor’s death as of Tuesday morning.

The Pete Edochie death rumours mark the latest episode in a long-running pattern of online hoaxes targeting the revered actor, who holds the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger.

Similar false reports first surfaced more than a decade ago and have resurfaced intermittently in recent years.

Family members have previously dismissed such claims, with Uche Edochie on earlier occasions describing the reports as malicious fabrications designed to generate online traffic.

Past versions of the rumour variously claimed the actor died abroad or following an accident, all of which were later proven false.

The renewed speculation triggered sharp reactions from social media users, many of whom condemned the spread of unverified information and warned against exploiting public figures for engagement.

Several commentators described the reports as distressing and disrespectful to the actor’s legacy.

Pete Edochie remains one of Nigeria’s most influential screen icons, celebrated for decades of work that shaped Nollywood’s storytelling tradition and cultural identity.
