Rechael Okonkwo’s Carnival Gives Free Care to 5,000
Rechael Okonkwo’s carnival provided free healthcare to over 5,000 Nsukka residents, alongside support for widows and children
Nollywood actress Rechael Okonkwo, popularly known as Nkoli Nwa Nsukka, provided free healthcare to more than 5,000 residents of Nsukka, Enugu State, during the eighth edition of her annual Nkoli Mega Carnival in August 2026.

The community-focused event, organised in partnership with the Franklin Junior Foundation, brought doctors, nurses, laboratory personnel and other healthcare professionals together to provide consultations, medicines and basic medical support to residents.
Beneficiaries also received wheelchairs, walking aids and reading glasses, while people requiring specialised attention were referred to hospitals for further treatment.
David Ofogba, Director of Programmes at the Franklin Junior Foundation, said the partnership was driven by a desire to make basic healthcare more accessible to residents who might otherwise struggle to afford it.
“The most striking thing for us is seeing the needs of the needy being met, making them happy and giving them hope in life,” Ofogba said.
According to the foundation, the medical outreach had attended to more than 5,000 patients since Friday, with health professionals identifying conditions including malaria and glaucoma among some of the cases.
Dr Chinonso Gabriel, one of the medical practitioners involved in the exercise, said patients who needed further medical attention were referred for specialised care.
For Okonkwo, the medical intervention added a significant new dimension to a carnival that has evolved from an entertainment gathering into a broader platform for community support.
The actress has linked her commitment to giving back to her own childhood experience. She lost her father at the age of 13 and has spoken about the challenges of growing up without substantial financial resources or influential connections.
That experience, she said, shaped her understanding of vulnerability and strengthened her determination to help people facing similar difficulties.
“Your background shouldn’t determine your future. With determination, you can make it,” Okonkwo said.
The return of Rechael Okonkwo’s carnival was itself significant. The event had taken a two-year break after the previous edition in 2023, with rising costs making it difficult to maintain its traditional Easter schedule.
Okonkwo initially struggled with the financial realities of reviving the carnival before encouragement from her friend and brother, Monday Diamond, helped convince her to proceed.
The eighth edition eventually took place in August, rather than during its traditional Easter period, and came with a broader social-impact programme.
Beyond healthcare, 500 vulnerable widows received food and household items, including rice, tomato paste, noodles, wrappers, children’s clothing, school bags and writing materials.
Children also participated in an educational quiz, with bicycles presented as prizes to encourage interest in learning and reward participation.
The carnival’s expansion into healthcare was made possible through the partnership with the Franklin Junior Foundation, which had taken an interest in the community work surrounding the event.
The foundation’s involvement helped transform what had traditionally been a celebratory gathering into an opportunity to address some immediate health and welfare needs within the community.
Beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the intervention, particularly the provision of medicines and mobility aids without the usual financial burden.
For Okonkwo, the initiative reflects a wider belief that people can contribute to their communities in different ways.
“People are called in different ways, and there are different ways of touching lives,” she said.
The actress also acknowledged the brands, volunteers, media organisations and other supporters whose contributions helped bring the event back after its two-year absence.
Among the organisations recognised were Nestlé, Knorr, Golden Penny, Stanel, Bestie Noodles, Wellington Blue Hotels, Aqua Rapha and Lush.
Now in its eighth edition, the Nkoli Mega Carnival is increasingly taking on a role beyond entertainment. Its combination of healthcare, education, welfare and celebration has given the initiative a more powerful community dimension.
For Okonkwo, the carnival represents a personal response to a difficult beginning and an opportunity to ensure that other people, particularly children, widows and families with limited means, receive support when they need it.

The message at the heart of the initiative remains straightforward: a person’s circumstances at the beginning of life should not determine how far that person can go.
