Rema’s “Kelebu” Sparks Global Dance Fever

Rema releases “Kelebu,” a bold, horn-driven single blending Bouyon, Makossa, and Coupé-décalé. He’s offering $10K for the best dance on TikTok.

Afrobeats sensation Rema has set the summer in motion with “Kelebu,” his vibrant, genre-fusing new single that officially dropped on Friday, July 26.

The track is an energetic blend of pulsating horns, rhythmic percussion, and contagious hooks that pay homage to Francophone Caribbean and African dance music.

“Ok ..I want y’all to DANCE this summer!” Rema teased on X earlier in the week, stoking fan anticipation ahead of the release.

According to The Native, “Kelebu” draws sonic inspiration from Bouyon (Dominica), Makossa (Cameroon), and Coupé-décalé (Côte d’Ivoire) genres known for their upbeat, percussive dance rhythms that dominate clubs and street parties across the Francophone world.

In a statement to Rolling Stone, Rema explained the personal roots of “Kelebu”:

“Growing up we used to dance to a lot of Caribbean and Francophone bounces. We didn’t care about what they were sayin they just kept repeating one word with a fantastic instrumental I’m reliving those moments by expressing it with my art.”

A $10,000 Incentive to Move

In a bold marketing move, the “Calm Down” hitmaker is offering $10,000 to the creator of the best original dance for “Kelebu.” On July 27, he posted:

$10K for whoever come up with a EASY dance for KELEBU. out this Friday!”

The challenge has taken TikTok by storm, with over 14,500 videos using the sound so far. One viral clip humorously showed a creator trying to convince shy friends to join her:

“Me explaining to my friends the thing we could buy with $10k if they can stop being shy and dance with me on the internet.”

As the beat dropped, she listed goals like “Buy Nigeria” and “Buy our enemies,” syncing hilariously to the song’s dramatic intro and explosive horn break.

“Kelebu” is Rema’s third single of 2025, following the success of “Bout U” (April) and “Baby (Is It a Crime)” (February). The latter debuted with nearly 3 million first-day streams and has since amassed over 62 million streams on Spotify and 20 million views on YouTube.

Despite his growing global footprint, Rema stays grounded.

“I didn’t really spend much time on the comments or reception, trying to feed my ego or something,” he told Rolling Stone. “I’m that guy who’ll post something and just go to bed.”

With “Kelebu,” Rema not only delivers a nostalgic nod to the multicultural sounds of his youth but also opens the floor for fans worldwide to join in literally.
