Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, the Nigerian singer-songwriter, born Michael Adebayo Olayinka, described kidnapping as a “full-time business” in some parts of the country. He added that the situation could worsen as people travel home for end-of-year celebrations.

“I’m scared for people this December. Kidnapping has become a full time business in some parts of Nigeria. And it’s only gonna get worse this festive season,” he wrote.

Ruger stressed that returning Nigerians from abroad, or those perceived to be wealthy, are particularly at risk. According to him, criminals now target travellers with the belief that they carry substantial money or gifts.

“People will travel back to their villages from abroad and from many other places in Nigeria. These bastards will strike hard,” he added.

The singer’s remarks come amid growing public concern over rising insecurity across the country, particularly in rural areas and highways, where kidnappings for ransom have become increasingly common.

While Ruger is widely known for his music, he has often used his platform to speak on social issues affecting Nigerians, including safety, governance, and youth welfare.
