Spyro spoke while looking back on the years before his music career took hold. He said his father often told him he was not sure the boy would succeed.

“My father would always tell me as a child that he wasn’t sure I would be successful, so I started seeing myself as a failure. I’d go to school and ask myself, ‘Can I even graduate from here?’ I felt like someone who couldn’t do anything right.”

He said the doubts started early and stayed with him as he measured his own ability.

The remarks drew mixed comment online. Some listeners said parents should not speak that fear aloud.

Others called it a harsh push that Spyro later outgrew. The account is Spyro’s memory of home. His father has not been quoted in reply.
