Thomas Partey charged with five counts of rape and one of sexual assault involving three women; the former Arsenal midfielder denies all allegations
Thomas Partey charged with rape as the Metropolitan Police formally accuse the former Arsenal midfielder of multiple serious offences involving three women.
The charges include five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, alleged to have occurred between 2021 and 2022.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that two of the rape charges relate to one woman, while three further rape charges involve a second woman. The sexual assault charge concerns a third individual.
The 32-year-old Ghanaian international, who denies all the charges, will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 5 August. His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, said, “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.”
Partey, whose £45.3 million move from Atletico Madrid to Arsenal in 2020 was one of the club’s most high-profile transfers, played 130 Premier League matches for the Gunners.
He scored nine goals and was a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s midfield.
His contract officially ended on Monday.
During the last season, Partey appeared 35 times in the Premier League, netting four goals.
He also played 12 matches in the Champions League, helping Arsenal reach the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain.
Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.
He remains an active member of Ghana’s national team, with over 50 caps and recent appearances in World Cup qualifiers as recently as March.
The charges come after a police investigation that began in February 2022, following the first report of rape.
Det Supt Andy Furphy, leading the case, stated: “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.”
Authorities have encouraged the public to reach out by emailing CIT@met.police.uk.
Given the ongoing legal proceedings, Partey has been advised not to speak further on the matter.
BBC News has contacted Arsenal, the Premier League and the Football Association for comment. None have responded publicly at the time of this report.
