Court documents filed on Thursday, 11 September 2025, reveal that Tomeka is seeking a formal end to her marriage with the Senegalese American music star.
The filing, submitted to the Fulton County Superior Court in Georgia, cites “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the breakdown of the long-standing relationship.
In her petition, Tomeka Thiam requested joint legal custody of their 17-year-old daughter, with visitation rights granted to Akon.
She is also seeking spousal support, while asking the court to deny any such request from her estranged husband.

The couple tied the knot in September 1996 and have since kept much of their relationship out of the public eye.
However, rumours about marital challenges have circulated intermittently over the past decade.

He has also faced backlash for controversial remarks about the origins of Afrobeats and his role in launching the careers of artists like Wizkid.
As the divorce process begins, neither Akon nor Tomeka has publicly commented on the filing.
However, the court’s involvement suggests a definitive turn in their relationship after nearly three decades of marriage.
