The celebrated actress and filmmaker made the revelation during a candid moment at the premiere of the film Ginger, where she spoke with popular TikToker Jarvis.
Toyin, who has built her film career largely in the Yoruba-language film industry, said her inability to speak Edo stems from being born and raised in Yoruba land, and further reinforced by her marriage to a Yoruba man.
“I can’t speak Edo,” she confessed. “You know I was born and brought up in Yoruba land. And I married a Yoruba man. So I’m practically Yoruba. I can’t even speak Edo. One bit. But there’s no Yoruba I can’t speak.”
Born in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, Toyin Abraham spent her formative years in Ibadan, Oyo State, where she became immersed in Yoruba culture and language.
Her education also reflects this strong Yoruba influence — she attended Osun State Polytechnic in Iree, followed by Ibadan Polytechnic, before fully venturing into acting, where she rose to become one of the leading figures in Nigeria’s film industry.
Toyin’s admission underscores the fluid nature of identity and cultural assimilation in Nigeria’s multi-ethnic society, where one’s environment can significantly shape language and cultural expression.
