Daddy Freeze Dismisses Wizkid–Fela Comparison

Daddy Freeze Wizkid Fela comparison sparks debate as the media personality insists Fela Kuti’s legacy was rooted in activism and sacrifice, not music alone

Media personality and broadcaster Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze, has rejected ongoing online debates comparing Afrobeats star Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known as Wizkid, with Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, describing the comparison as deeply flawed.

Speaking during a recent video broadcast in Lagos, Daddy Freeze said the argument ignored the defining pillars of Fela Kuti’s life, insisting that the late musician’s influence was anchored in fearless activism, sacrifice and resistance to oppressive governance.

Daddy Freeze described Fela Anikulapo Kuti not simply as an entertainer but as a committed freedom fighter, philanthropist and outspoken critic of injustice, whose music served as a weapon against political oppression.

According to the broadcaster, Wizkid’s global success and cultural impact cannot be equated with Fela’s legacy without similar real world courage and confrontation with power.

Daddy Freeze said that until Wizkid demonstrates the willingness to challenge government authority and endure personal risk, any comparison with Fela remains misplaced.

He further highlighted Fela Kuti’s brutal encounters with the state, recalling repeated imprisonments, physical assaults and the circumstances surrounding his release from prison in 1995 due to serious illness.

Daddy Freeze said Fela was released to die at home because authorities feared the national outrage that would follow if the activist musician died in custody.

The broadcaster stressed that Fela’s activism and music were inseparable, describing them as a powerful force for social and political change rather than provocation for its own sake.

Daddy Freeze added that reducing Fela Kuti’s legacy to music charts or popularity strips away the historical struggle that defined his life and impact, urging Nigerians to approach the debate with context and respect.
