The film, whose title translates to “woman” in the Itsekiri language, was written and executive-produced by Laju Iren under her production company, Laju Iren Films, and directed by Odion Iraoya.

Onobiren tells the story of Roli, played by Ruby Akubueze, a young woman from Warri who leaves her riverine community for Lagos in pursuit of a new life.

The narrative explores her struggles with tradition, societal expectations, and faith as she attempts to carve her own path.

The ensemble cast also features veteran actors Patience Ozokwo, Deyemi Okanlawon, Bisola Aiyeola, Norbert Young, Chude Jideonwo, and Desmond Bryce.

Speaking on the project, Laju Iren said: “Onobiren is a film that is so dear to me personally and to all of us at Laju Iren Films. We need more stories that elevate women, and the men who support them, spotlight Africa positively, and showcase the intersection between life and faith. Shot in Warri and Lagos, this is also our biggest film yet in terms of production; it is fitting that this is our first film in brick-and-mortar cinemas and we cannot wait for the world to see it.”

The film, shot across Warri and Lagos, marks Laju Iren’s first theatrical release after a string of faith-based and digital productions, including Loving Amanda and Last to Marry.
