Speed Darlington Sues NAPTIP For Rights Violation

Speed Darlington sues NAPTIP for N3 billion over alleged human rights violation after being declared wanted for refusing to answer sexual misconduct claims

Controversial Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington has filed a lawsuit against the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), seeking a total of N3 billion in damages.

The artist alleges that the agency violated his fundamental human rights by publicly declaring him wanted without due legal process.

The lawsuit follows an incident on 27 June, when NAPTIP issued a public notice stating that Darlington had refused to honour an invitation for questioning.

The summons came after the rapper allegedly claimed to have had sexual relations with a 15-year-old girl—remarks that sparked public outrage.

Speed Darlington later retracted his statement, insisting it was a publicity stunt and not a genuine admission.

Nevertheless, the agency continued its investigation, eventually labelling him as a wanted person.

That declaration, according to the rapper, was unlawful and damaging to his reputation and well-being.

In the legal documents filed with the court, Darlington’s legal team argued that NAPTIP acted outside its powers.

“A declaration that the very act of declaring the applicant wanted… Without any prior order or leave of a court of competent jurisdiction is unlawful, illegal, wrongful, ultra vires, unconstitutional,” the suit read.

It added that the agency’s action “constitutes a flagrant violation of the fundamental rights of the applicant to personal liberty, private and family life, freedom of movement, and right not to be subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment.”

The rapper is demanding a formal apology from the agency, alongside N1 billion in general damages and N2 billion in punitive damages.

Additionally, he requests that the court order a 5% monthly interest on the awarded sum until the full amount is paid.

There was no investigation, no legal summons served, and no warrant. They went straight to social media and labelled me a criminal. That is not justice.

Public reaction to the legal battle has been mixed. While some have expressed sympathy for Speed Darlington’s right to defend his name, others remain critical, especially given the gravity of his original comments.

Speaking through his representatives, the rapper maintained his innocence and described NAPTIP’s actions as both premature and vindictive.

“There was no investigation, no legal summons served, and no warrant. They went straight to social media and labelled me a criminal. That is not justice,” he said.

The case brings renewed attention to the intersection of social media, public accountability, and law enforcement in Nigeria.

Critics argue that government agencies should exercise more caution and due process before issuing public statements that can irreparably damage a person’s life and career.

Human rights advocates have also weighed in. “This case should serve as a warning to institutions,” said a Lagos-based legal analyst.

“Whether Speed Darlington is guilty or not, the agency must follow the law. You cannot bypass the judiciary and act based on online outrage.”

As the legal battle unfolds, both parties are expected to appear before the court later this year.
