Nigerian singer Waje has dismissed long-standing rumours suggesting she was in a romantic relationship with rapper M.I Abaga, explaining that their connection was purely musical.

Speaking on The Honest Bunch podcast, the award-winning vocalist said speculation began after their hit song One Naira, which portrayed a love story between two characters.

“Because of the rollout and romantic theme of my collaborative song with M.I, One Naira, a lot of people speculated that we were dating. But we never dated,” Waje clarified.

“We were just friends who saw how great a love story in a song could be, so we created characters that would help drive the song.”

The singer further revealed that M.I’s then-girlfriend even contributed to the track, providing the voice-over that many fans had assumed was hers.

“His then-girlfriend was even the one who did the voice-over, not me,” she said.

Beyond addressing the rumours, Waje reflected on her approach to relationships, stating that at her age, she prefers meaningful partnerships and would not settle for an unmotivated partner.
